Dance Illusion (by Nikki Fleming Middle Eastern Dancer Vol 9 #11)
             starring: Malika, Shahira & Delilah

Interested in a video that offers eight dazzling performances by four stellar dancers plus two lessons? Then Belly Dance Paradise, is the video for you.

The tape begins with Atlantis. Resplendent in gold and white, and beautifully manipulating a large, split veil from Floor Work to Standing Bolero, she performs to the strains of Midnight Farewell from Raja’s Dance Reaction album. I usually use the word fiery to describe Atlantis’ style. Not this time. Sultry and dreamy are adjectives that come to mind. Pay particular attention to Atlantis’ belly and rib cage work, and her sinuous snakes to the floor.

Saphira follows, seeming to revel in the music of Baladi Mood from Raja’s Dancer’s Dream album. Costumed in silver and white, her hip work is beautifully articulated. Later in the tape, she does athletic floor: flexible and balletic Watch her great isolations. Ansuya, in gold, white, and blue for her first performance on the video, effortlessly played with the phrasing of her music.

Watch her artful footwork, her loose hips, and the occasional flashes of a more folky style.

Fatiem’s first performance, a taxim, on this tape can be described as smoke and smoldering. Her arms move like water, artfully framing her body and emphasizing each movement. Later in the tape, she executes a lively Karsilama, using a five-yard veil. First costumed in topaz and ivory, she later dances in blazing red. And there’s more. Not sure what to do with a 6/8?

Atlantis, in leotard with Tonya’s voice-over explanation, teaches a spirited and sassy Persian routing. She methodically breaks down each stop and then fluidly weaves them together to construct an entire choreography. Fatiem, teaching a beginner routing, proves that it is not what you do, but how you do it. Teaching several basic steps to a Baladi rhythm, she illustrates something that she has long advocated: that the simplest steps executed with style and elegance. Can take on a beautiful and professional appearance.

She finishes by transitioning the steps into a routine. I think that Raja outdid himself with this video. He selected four highly regarded pros with very different styles and presentations. By giving each lady two different rhythms to work with, we get a nice range of that dancer’s special graces, skills, and stylistic nuances.

In short, it appears that Raja and the ladies put a lot of thought into this tape. Add the two teaching segments to this and one finds that this production offers a lot of entertainment. Combined with the flash and powerful energies of the performers, uniquely captured by the cameras, his ability to integrate all these elements result in a far superior visual experience of motion and music. His musical talents, as well as his direction, are exemplified in this video as well as all his videos. This video includes teaching 6/8 routing by Atlantis and beginner’s instructions by Fahtiem as well as exceptional performances by Safeera and Ansuya.

The Belly Dancer I (by Sally Jean Baker)
starring: Suzanna Del Vecchio, Atlantis, Malika, Tahia & Sahra

Recently, I wrote into your OPINIONS column about a certain video being marketed that I didn’t care for. I have since received several comments which appreciated my honest opinion and candor. As I’m not actively dancing, I can’t be accused of stabbing competition in the back and therefore, can speak freely. Lest anyone think I’m being critical too often, let me tell you of a video which cannot be praised highly enough. If you don’t have this tape in your library, you’re cheating yourself out of the best I’ve seen in my 30-year love affair with Middle Eastern dance. The video is Dance Illusion by Raja. This video describes itself as supreme effort in quality and style for you. This, my friends, is absolutely the most accurate advertising I’ve ever seen. The music is utterly fantastic and the album or video is a must! There are only three dancers in the whole video. Before you pre-judge it as boring or lackluster, though, wait ‘till you see it! Hard to believe that only three dancers can carry an entire show, but these three do it with unbelievable style.

The first number is by Delilah, a beautiful woman who amply shows her great strength of hip articulations. You can get dizzy just trying to follow her movements. She has the most perfect poise, facial expressions and body language I’ve ever seen in an American dancer. Watching her is like watching a Middle Eastern musical. The emerald green costume she wears is dazzling.

The second number is by Malika, a young lady we don’t see enough of. She does an elegant but simple balance-a-glass-on-her-head routine but take my word for it, she’s just getting warmed up.

The third number is by Delilah again. She demonstrates her stamina and perfect body control in a hard and fast dance that doesn’t even leave her breathing hard. A well deserved look of pride with a touch of playfulness coupled with a great ending highlight this dance.

The fourth number is by Malika and demonstrates her unparalleled ability to make a veil come alive. She and her veil become on entity which is greater that the sum of its parts.

The fifth is a cane dance done by Delilah and Shahira and is absolutely the best cane routine I’ve ever see, bar none! Delilah has a flair that makes it a delight to watch and I’m hard to please when it comes to canes. The music is perfect to the choreography and the costumes are fantastic. Delilah so overpoweringly commands the stage that one hardly notices Shahira. This is unfortunate because Shaira deserves to be noticed.

The sixth number is by a very noticeable Shahira wearing a beautiful green and blue costume with gorgeous beadwork.

She tends to just drip with a soft, innocent look which is an excellent contrast to Delilah’s forcefulness. My hat is off to the producer.

The seventh dances is by Malika who again makes a veil do everything but dance by itself. Her dance is like a fantastic dream. She uses a touch of jazz and ballet which enhances her performance. When this young lady dances, she needs a large stage and uses every bit of it playfully. Also, she does a backbend that will amaze you with the strength and agility at her command. Her sharp, precise isolations and finale will leave you breathless.

Dance number eight is by Shahira who does a subtle, controlled routine with lots of untapped energy like a ham holding back the ocean. The ninth routing is a strongly powerful and dramatic piece by Delilah who is totally involved in her dance. Her great stage presence is exceeded only by undulating backbend any dancer would envy, not to mention her floor work and spectacular poses.

The last dance is a drum solo by Malika who transforms a drum into a symphony. She dances with such energy to impress even the most difficult to please. An unbelievable head spin and shimmy is easy for this dancer whose body of solid muscle is like that of a tigress.

The Belly Dancer II (by Sally Jean Baker)
starring: Suzanna Del Vecchio, Atlantis, Malika & Tahia

This is the sequel to the Belly Dancer I video with quality performances by the dancers you saw in the original taken to another level. Suzanna Del Vechhio exquisite veil work contrasts with Atlantis’s fiery dynamics, as does Malika’s jazzy style with Tahia’s gracefulness. The music is selected from Raja’s best and features a variety of rhythms as well as exciting drum solos. In contrast to the fast cuts and camera angles of the first video, The Belly Dancer II is edited simply to allow you, the viewer to appreciate each performers complete composition.
Dancing Live To Raja (by Sally Jean Baker Habibi Vol. 10 No. 12)
starring: Sahra, Mesmera, Angelika, Maneth, Jenaeni & Ansuya

Now you can see how a dancer and a musician perform together. Raja has been promising you a surprise and his latest video tape is the best yet, as well as the most dramatic video he has done to date. Much reference has been made about Raja’s versatility, you have heard his music and seen wonderful dancers, but never before have you seen all of them combined at once. Rajas has really outdone himself this time. The viewer has an opportunity to see Raja the musician, as well as some of the best dancers this author has ever seen Live. Let me present to you Dancing Live to Raja.

Dancing Live to Raja incorporates Raja on percussion-such as, congas, bongos, dumbak, etc. You see and hear his incredible assortment of synthesizers, as well as his windpipes such as the mijwiz and the flute. John Bilezikjian performs a number with Raja and on of his dancers. John is America’s leading Oud Virtuoso, he is an exceptional master of the melodic stringed instrument and his contribution to this particular performance adds depth and full richness to the dancer’s solo.

Technically, Raja and staff have created a real show for the viewer. A show that holds a sense of suspense and super entertainment. The back grounds and atmosphere as well as the dancers and Raja’s music productions are beautifully executed. Visual effects of lighting, camera work and the talents of all involved, under the direction of Ed Zahr all culminate in one of Raja’s most spectacular dance video productions. But the greatest aspect of this video is the fact that one gets to see an actual interlude between dancer and musician. The dancers put the piece de resistance into this video. Where Raja finds these talented creatures is his secret, but all I know is with each tape the dancers get more beautiful, more creative and more sensual. So dancers, get out your pads and pens: there are some great steps and ideas to pick up in this tape and if you are not a dancer, just sit back and enjoy this entertaining video. Sahra, as usual is up to par.

She never misses a beat and her wonderful sense of Middle Eastern style is full of energy. She dances well to live musicians and I liked the way she acknowledges her musicians, a nice grace to dance etiquette. Here John Bilezkjian on the oud and Raja on the drums and flute really create an authentic Mid-Eastern melodic tone that Sahra can really show her vast repertoire of dance steps off to you, the viewer.

Angelika Nemeth is a strong excellent dancer. Her lead-in to her first solo is both powerful and dramatic. The mystique setup in this dance performance and Raja’s use of the keyboard synthesizer and atmosphere set the viewer up for quite a show. Pay attention to the way she uses the veil. I won’t tell you what she does, you have to see. Angelika moves in perfect synchronization in her drum solo with Raja. She anticipates every beat of Raja’s music and is ready with some incredible moves which makes for an exciting performance. This dancer is very versatile, she does a Zar dance that is marvelous. Don’t miss her cane dance or the smashing costume for that matter.

Ansuya is a new young dancer that should be watched closely. This teen does a lovely Baladi dance. There is a unique style and charm about her performance. Her innocent, yet flirtatious style can’t help but captivate the viewer. For the dancer, watch her nice used of the arms, she appears to really have a authentic Middle Eastern air in the way she performs. It’s no wonder, however, she learned everything she knows from Jenaeni.

Jenaeni is a well known dancer to Raja, and dancing live with him performing is not foreign to her when she first preformed, Raja was the musician. Jenaeni has an unusually smooth style about her dance. There are major overtones of Hindi and it is obvious that she has spent much time in perfecting her method of dance.

Her dance is more in the traditional style of Middle Eastern dance, her soft and gentle moves fill one with a sense of longing, she has an angelic quality. Oh, she’s not so soft that she can’t do a mean shimmy, and watch her interlude with Raja between her zills and his drums.

Mesmera dances exactly as her name says, she is mesmerizing! She dances a dance with a most unusual partner. You know, we don’t always have to like our dance partners and sometimes we can even go so far as to refer to the person as a snake well, in Mesmer’s case, this duet had better be between friends and she'd better like him, for this partner really I and truly is a snake, a Boa Constrictor to be exact. This is a dance between a dancer and a snake and Raja’s masterful use of the sound effects of the synthesizers and the creation of a mysterious atmosphere. Mesmera is truly a dancer’s dancer. I mean the lady can really dance in all respects of the word. Her cabaret routine is sensual with definitive powerful movements in rhythm and grace. Don’t miss her costume-it is stunning beyond reason. She also performs an African dance which is really well choreographed. Mesmera has obviously spent a lot of time studying all aspects of dance, and it shows. Her timing is perfect and she and Raja demonstrate to us that a dancer and a musician really need to be respectful of how they can create an exciting and dynamic performance.

I am already hoping for another tape from Raja. This was so spectacular that it is hard to imagine what Raja will do next. Raja is quite capable of surprises, so instead of starting to wonder about what his next exciting venture in dance and music will be, let me just say this. Raja has a sense of creativity that won’t quit. He has the know how, the talent, instruments, and all the other items that go into presenting you with some fun and entertaining performances as well as dancers. So let’s get after him to produce more music. Dancing Live to Raja just wets the appetite. Let’s keep a look out for more videos form Raja. Bravo Raja!
